Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s Creative Communications Reduces Overflows
The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) has taken an innovative approach to reducing water pollution from sewer overflows when large storms threaten their area by creating a text alert system for its ratepayers, the Water Drop Alert™.
Subscribers who opt into the system receive a text message notifying them to use less water during wet weather events. In addition to the text alert, MMSD posts messages on its social media accounts and website. This multi-layered broadcasting system effectively notifies the community, resulting in a reduction of water usage and the threat of overflow into the environment.
MMSD was recognized with a NACWA 2021 National Environmental Achievement Award in the Public Information & Education - E-Media category for its creative communications solution. Congratulations to MMSD and everyone involved!
