JEFFERSON CITY — In his State of the State address months ago, Gov. Mike Parson pointed to billions of federal funding distributed to Missouri as an opportunity to make "investments in the future."

Lawmakers have responded with a budget bill outlining nearly $2.9 billion in spending using money from the American Rescue Plan Act, passed by Congress last year in an effort to blunt the economic impacts of COVID-19.

Cities, counties and community organizations have geared up to receive money from the state, in addition to money directed specifically to local governments. Major focuses of the $2.88 billion aid package include one-time investments in construction at colleges and universities, storm and wastewater infrastructure, broadband expansion and local community development projects.
